Firms that experience high growth have long been of great interest to policy makers, entrepreneurs and researchers because of the contribution they can make to the economy. This study explored the ‘growth mindset’, building on the idea of entrepreneurial mindsets. It sought to understand more about the personal factors associated with the processes of seeking and achieving growth. The research team undertook in-depth interviews with 30 entrepreneurs who have a track record of success, followed by an on-line survey asking questions grouped under themes that emerged from the interviews.
The research points to a complex combination of elements that can contribute to a high growth mindset. These include a mixture of expertise, vision, and drive. Particularly important was active decision-making - an ability to identify when it is necessary to stop, think and plan without losing the ability to act. This may be a vital overarching constituent of the high growth mindset providing the means by which other elements can be reconfigured.
This study used multi-methods, including a large-scale survey and in-depth interviews with entrepreneurs who have a track record of success, to bring new insights to how growth entrepreneurs think.
